cover Amazon's Review
Focusing on Visual Basic 6's new data-access resources, Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic and SQL Server is the definitive guide to Microsoft's database development tools. If you're concerned with creating a way for a Visual Basic application or control to talk to an SQL Server back end, this book most likely has the answers you need.
Microsoft has six major SQL interface solutions: Visual Basic SQL (VBSQL), Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), Data Access Objects (DAO)/Jet, DAO/ODBCDirect, Remote Data Objects (RDO), and ActiveX Data Objects (ADO). William Vaughn covers all of them in this book, plus the low-level SQL Server interfaces. He includes quite a lot of sample code (in the text and on the companion CD-ROM) that shows how different access mechanisms open connections, perform queries, and return values. Sidebars and other supplementary nuggets of text use the first person to great effect--they enable Vaughn to share his considerable experience in a straightforward way.
ADO, the apparent replacement for most of Microsoft's other database-access technologies, receives especially lavish treatment. The author details each part of an ADO-facilitated transaction, and goes into depth on how to build custom ADO objects and how (and whether) to convert from RDO to ADO.
If yours is a Microsoft shop, this book will prove invaluable in connecting people to the data they need.

Teach Yourself Active Web Database Programming in 21 Days is a comprehensive guide to the collection of technologies offered by Microsoft for accessing data via Web pages. The book's four authors do an excellent job of taking the reader through the underpinnings of today's Web, although the writing from chapter to chapter differs a bit, no doubt a result of its team authorship. Assuming the reader has a general knowledge of Visual Basic programming, the book lays out the foundations of HTTP, Web servers, browsers, and page delivery through HTML and CGI scripts. The center of the book outlines three major Microsoft technologies: Active Server Pages (ASPs) based on VBScript; ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), for getting to databases and generating Web pages dynamically from data; and the new Advanced Data Connector (ADC) technology, which allows Web pages to access live data. Though they occasionally slip into advertising mode for Microsoft's solutions, the authors are careful to show why each technology offers distinct advantages for Web developers. They do a particularly good job at explaining the underlying architecture of each technology, and include careful diagrams. The book also contains reference material covering the properties and methods for the scripting objects used in each of the technologies presented. Simple source code snippets, as well as numerous screenshots, will help the reader throughout the book. Working examples for several data-driven Web sites are also included. A handy appendix with online sources for all the necessary tools rounds out the book. For Microsoft-based Web developers, this title will surely be a very useful tutorial and guide.

Jeffry Dwight and I wrote this book to help people just starting to learn CGI. Each example is basic enough that those just learning to program can follow along. Examples given are for those working with Unix and NT systems and cover various languages such as C, Visual Basic, and Perl.

Once you have the basics, you can easily modify any of the scripts included within the book to suit your individual needs. Each script also helps you gain the knowledge needed to write more complicated scripts.

The team behind Professional Active Server Pages 2.0 has written a definitive guide for the latest version of ASP included with Windows 2000. This lengthy text offers a comprehensive look at the technology and is geared toward seasoned professionals looking to truly master this important development platform. The team of authors touch on almost every topic a working ASP coder might be interested in, including what to do when "it all goes wrong."
This title is divided into six sections that focus on key aspects of ASP: the basics, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), building components for ASP, integration with BackOffice, security/performance/scalability, and reference material. This organization makes the book useful for both lengthy reads and quick daily reference. The index and set of appendices are also quite comprehensive.
Code snippets of judicious size and summary boxes with key information such as errors and function calls make the reading productive without being distracting. Most of the material is presented in a structured topical tutorial; however, an excellent XML newspaper case study provides a real-world perspective on XML and ASP.
While a number of working programmers authored this guide, the group's expertise has been well-integrated to read consistently. The team provides some error-preventing programming procedures such as formatting and indenting code, being "Explicit" about declarations, converting variables to the appropriate data types, using good variable naming conventions, encapsulating script, and more. Whether you're looking for information on utilizing components, implementing certificates, or working with Active Directory, you'll find answers in this fine work.

Professional ASP Techniques for Webmasters sits right at the center of the web application information space, on both the strategic and tactical levels, and will save its purchasers from hours of painful struggle and experimentation. The major sections describe dynamic web page generation, site navigation, browser compatibility, remote administration, and gathering information and creating reports about site visitors. A final "plug and play" chapter includes a number of tricks and traps that didn't fit in logically elsewhere, ranging from the creation of pop-up windows to configuring the IIS SMTP service. The book is supplemented with downloads, errata, and feedback forms on the WROX web site.
We've come to expect high standards of quality from WROX Press, and this book is no exception. Professional ASP Techniques for Webmasters is clearly written and carefully edited, with a clean design, program listings that actually work, appropriate use of screen shots, and a minimum of fluff. This is not the kind of book you'll want to read from cover to cover, but its practical advice and example code will come in handy over and over again.
